The variety of tournaments at Poker Stars is such that everyone can find a tournament to suit their tastes. Not only are there single- and multi-table tournaments, but there are many types of variations from free rolls and satellites to shoot-outs, re-buys and sit-and-go’s. The general format for tournaments at Poker Stars is as follows: The players all start with the same number of chips and play at several tables. As players lose their chips and are eliminated from the tournament, Poker Stars breaks down the tables and moves players around to keep the tables balanced. Poker Stars offers multi-table tournaments both for cash payouts or satellite tickets into larger tournaments. Tournaments require pre-registration in the lobby and Poker Stars randomly assigns the seats. After registering, it’s possible to un-register as long as it is before registration closes. Instead of a cash refund, Poker Stars provides “T Dollars” which is a credit that players can use to buy in to another tournament.

One variation of a multi-table tournament is a shoot-out. During this type of tournament, Poker Stars will not break down and balance the table. Instead, each table plays until only one person is left. The last person at each table advances to the next round which is the final table. The winner of this final table is the winner of the tournament.

Another type of tournament is the satellite tournament; it can be single- or multi- table. This is a smaller tournament with a relatively small buy-in. The prize for the satellite tournament isn’t a cash payout – it’s a ticket to enter a larger, more expensive tournament. Satellite tournaments play exactly the same way as other tournaments with the only difference being the prize.

Yet another tournament offered at Poker Stars is a free roll. Free roll tournaments run exactly the same as other tournaments, but the buy-in is completely free and the prize is cash.

Re-buy tournaments put a new twist on elimination tournaments. Instead of players getting eliminated when they run out of chips, they have the option to purchase more during a re-buy tournament (with restrictions, of course). Basically how it works is that there is a “re-buy” period during the beginning of the tournament (usually during the first hour). Some tournaments will have a set number of available re-buys available to each person and some tournaments will have an unlimited number. Players who run out of chips will automatically be offered a re-buy if it is available. Players can also choose to re-buy chips if their stack goes equal to or below the original stack size. All of the money gathered from the re-buys is added to the prize pool, so the pay-out structure generally isn’t announced until after the re-buy period.

www.Poker Stars.net also offers a type of tournament that isn’t scheduled and that doesn’t require pre-registration: the sit-and-go. Sit-and-go tournaments begin as soon as all the seats are filled and there are four different kinds:

Single-table tournaments require nine players and pay the top three places (50%-30%-20%). Two-table tournaments require eighteen people that are randomly seated. After the first nine-players are eliminated, the tables combine to form one final table. Payouts go to the top four places (40%-30%-20%-10%). Heads-up tournaments are for two people and the winner takes all. The heads-up four player match is for four people; two tables hold two, two-player games. The winners of each table then compete. Winner takes all.
