PokerStars Rakeback
Rakeback is based on the house rake, which varies slightly between sites, but generally falls in about the 3% range. The rake is basically the house’s, or in this case the site’s, cut of the action. After all, they wouldn’t make any money running poker games if they didn’t take a small share of the action for themselves, and running poker rooms the size of PokerStars (or any size at all) isn’t cheap. This is because poker games are conducted entirely between players, and not between players and the house, as is the case with most other games, such as blackjack and roulette. |

Rakeback is basically just as the name would suggest; a portion of the rake which you contributed to pots being given back to you. So why would the house do this? After all, wouldn’t offering rakeback in the range of 30% drastically cut into their profits? Wouldn’t it all but defeat the purpose of charging a rake in the first place?
The reasoning is quite simple. Rakeback is never offered as a direct service through the site itself, in which case it indeed wouldn’t make much sense. Instead, the poker rooms have deals in place with other sites whereby they’ll offer rakeback services to players who sign up to their site through that vendor. In this way, the site offering the rakeback bonuses acts as an affiliate for the poker site, driving new traffic to their poker rooms.
The rakeback is typically calculated and added directly to the player’s existing bankroll directly. Many rakeback providers also offer rakeback calculators, which allow players who are so inclined to track the amount of rake they’ve contributed to pots, and their expected rakeback return.
In the end the poker room gets new players freely, the rakeback provider makes money through their deals with the poker sites, and the players save money; it’s basically a win-win situation for everyone involved.
So why doesn’t PokerStars offer rakeback? Their reasoning is that their lucrative VIP programs are more than enough reward for players, and in fact are a greater value to their players than the rakeback found at other sites. On one level this wouldn’t seem to be the case, as many of the other large sites offer rakeback in addition to their own rewards programs.
Still, we tend to agree with PokerStars that their outstanding rewards, as well as the overall depth of the site are at least on par with the rakeback/rewards combos found at other sites, if not greater. So while PokerStars may not offer a traditional rakeback program, you shouldn’t feel like you’re getting short-changed. It’s the largest poker site in the world for a reason, and that is because it offers tremendous value to its players on many different levels.
